TYPES OF SPORTS INJURIES

Injuries among young athletes fall into two basic categories: overuse injuries and acute injuries.

Acute injuries are caused by a trauma and include bruises, sprains (a ligament tear), strains (a muscle or tendon tear) and broken bones.

However, not all injuries are caused by a sudden fall or collision. A continuing series of small injuries can cause minor fractures, small muscle tears, or progressive bone deformities if not treated. These are called overuse injuries and typically affect the elbow, heels and knees.
